PRINCESS COUP TO SELL ON THE GOLD COAST Saturday, 9th May 2009 The protracted dispute over the future of New Zealand Oaks heroine Princess Coup is set to be resolved with the five-year-old daughter of Encosta De Lago to be offered for unreserved sale at the Magic Millions National Sale in June. Princess Coup was entered in the recent New Zealand Bloodstock Mixed Sale but the entry became the subject of an injunction and subsequent court action.
Earlier this week parties reached an agreement with the court directing the owners to appoint an independent bloodstock advisor. Michael Otto was chosen and the entry for the Gold Coast sale was made yesterday. Princess Coup will be prepared for the sale in the Hunter Valley and she will be consigned under the Willow Park Stud banner of Glenn Burrows and Joan Faras. At the heart of the wrangle between John Bromley and Ray Coupland is a basic disagreement over the future plans and value of the multiple Group 1 winner. Bromley makes no secret of his desire to breed with Princess Coup.He said: “I identified her as a yearling and actually the intention was that John O’Shea would train her, but when it became apparent that she was going to make more than I anticipated I looked to join forces with Ray.”
62 year-old Bromley is a relative newcomer to racing. A successful businessman and property developer, Bromley has had 61 winners in six years for nine Group 1 wins. He refers to Princess Coup as ‘my little princess’ and while he is pleased the situation has been resolved, he would prefer to be planning for Princess Coup’s breeding future rather than a sale. “I bought her to breed with and we were made a good offer from Australian interests for Ray’s share but he chose not to accept,” he explained. “She was entered in the New Zealand sale without my consent. The Inglis or Magic Millions was the place to sell her – all the big players are likely to be at either and with the timing now, Magic Millions is where she goes. I’m disappointed but >she is being consigned by the very best people so we go forward.”
The irony of the situation is that, despite being owned and trained in New Zealand, Princess Coup is returning home. Bred by Ingenue Breeding Syndicate & B W Wise, Princess Coup sold for $260,000 as a yearling at the Magic Millions National Sale in 2005. Trained by Mark Walker, she won 12 and placed in 10 of her 33 races, earning the equivalent of $A3,751,316. She won the Kelt Capital Stakes (Gr 1) last October. In total, Princess Coup won seven times at Group level, notably the New Zealand Oaks, two runnings of the Kelt Capital Stakes and the Stoney Bridge Stakes at Group 1 level. Her eight Group 1 placings include the Caulfield and Australian Cup, and the New Zealand 2000 and 1000 Guineas.
“We feel honoured to have been chosen to consign Princess Coup for sale,” Glenn Burrows said last night. “She’s by a champion sire, out of a stakes winner and she’s a cracking type.” Willow Park consigned Samantha Miss for sale as a yearling to make $1.5 million and Burrows is in little doubt that Princess Coup will surpass that. “This mare will make more, she’s a high-class racehorse and that’s what the market wants right now. Young mares with performance are certainly selling for a premium and Princess Coup certainly rates as one of the better mares to have raced in the last decade.”
