Willow Park Encosta Quinella Monday, 2nd February 2009 Tara Madgwick - Sunday, 1 February 2009
Smart Encosta de Lago four year-olds Largo Lad and Road to Rock indicated they will be in for good autumn carnivals when they powered home to run the quinella in the open sprint at Flemington on Saturday.
The David Hayes trained Largo Lad charged home from near last to defeat Road to Rock by a short head, taking his record to four wins from 16 starts with earnings in excess of $200,000.
Connections are reportedly planning on keeping the giant gelding fresh for a tilt at the Group One VRC Newmarket Handicap before coming to Sydney for the Doncaster.
A $75,000 purchase for De Burgh Farrington from the Willow Park Stud draft at the 2006 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Largo Lad (pictured as a yearling) was sold privately nearing the end of his three year-old preparation and now races for a syndicate of Hayes stable clients.
A half-brother to smart Adelaide galloper Woodland Jack, Largo Lad is the second foal of former very good Danehill (USA) racemare Lady Marion.
A Group Two winner of eight races and over $400,000 in prizemoney, Lady Marion was offered at the 2007 Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale with an Encosta de Lago filly at foot and was snapped up by Coolmore for $840,000.
Runner-up Road to Rock (pictured as a yearling- below) from the Anthony Cummings stable was also purchased from the same Willow Park draft at Easter in 2007 for $100,000.
A stakes-winner of the Listed AJC Carbine Club Stakes last autumn, Road to Rock has also won in excess of $200,000 and both horses will be worth watching in coming weeks.
