Finepoint adds more black type

27 Mar 2023

Lightly raced four-year-old mare Finepoint added further black type to her name on Saturday, rounding out a Chris Waller trifecta with her third placing in the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1500m).

Second up this preparation, Finepoint hit the lead with 300m to go under Regan Bayliss, before being tackled by Roots in the closing stages. Finepoint held on for third in a photo for the minor placings, finishing 1.7L from the winner.

Gaining her second placing at stakes level, Finepoint was having just her 12th start and is a winner of four, with a further six placings and $223,000 in the bank.

The talented mare is by Waikato Stud's late sire Pins (Snippets), out of the regally-bred Gr2 winner Zarzuela (Zabeel). Bred by Kiwi based David Paykel, Finepoint is the seventh and final foal of Zarzuela (NZ), who died the following season in New Zealand.

Five of Zarzuela's seven foals were born at Willow Park and three of those attained black type, including Gr3 winner Serious Satire (More Than Ready) and Gr2 placed Star Tsar (Fastnet Rock). All three were retained to race by the Paykel family, who also raced Zarzuela and her dam, the brilliant Grr1 winner Star Satire (Volksraad).
